The Via del Oro community offers 135 thoughtfully designed private rooms and comprehensive on-site supportive services for up to 150 residents transitioning out of homelessness. Built in partnership with the City of San José and made possible through the generosity of philanthropist John A. Sobrato, this interim supportive housing community is a cornerstone of the city’s bold strategy to achieve functional zero homelessness.

HomeFirst provides on-site supportive services, creating a safe and dignified community for residents. HomeFirst is a nonprofit organization with over 45 years of experience serving the Bay Area community through low-barrier programming and systems leadership, meeting each person where they are by offering support and resources that address immediate and long-term housing needs.

Personalized case management
Mental health counseling and wellness support
Job training and employment assistance
Permanent housing navigation and placement assistance
Via del Oro was made possible through a public-private partnership bringing together the City of San José, private philanthropy, and nonprofit expertise. The site was donated by philanthropist John A. Sobrato, removing one of the most significant barriers to getting a project like this built and enabling 135 units of interim supportive housing.
That partnership spirit extended beyond government and philanthropy. Before the first residents arrived, volunteers from across San José participated in Adopt-a-Unit weekends, furnishing each home and ensuring residents arrived to a place that already felt like theirs.
Via del Oro is now part of San José’s broader strategy to achieve functional zero unsheltered homelessness. It is what’s possible when city leadership, philanthropy, and nonprofit partners decide to start building.
