A Closer Look at the Community Coming to Santa Barbara

Site

Santa Barbara Family Village will offer 30 family units across a two-story building at 429 N San Antonio Road, designed specifically to meet the needs of families experiencing street homelessness in Santa Barbara. Each unit includes private bedrooms, bathrooms, and a kitchen — giving families the space, privacy, and stability they need to begin moving forward.

The community will feature shared amenities including community spaces, outdoor common areas, and dedicated space for on-site supportive services. Every element of the design reflects a commitment to dignity, safety, and the specific needs of families with children.

Families with Children

No child should grow up without a safe place to call home. Yet in Santa Barbara County, families with children are among the fastest-growing populations experiencing street homelessness.

As of the most recent count, an estimated 125 families with young children were experiencing homelessness in Santa Barbara County, a figure that jumped 34% in just one year, driven by a lack of affordable housing, stagnating wages, and the end of COVID-era rental assistance programs.

For children, the consequences extend far beyond a roof. Instability disrupts schooling, development, and health, and the longer a family remains without housing, the harder the path back becomes. Santa Barbara Family Village is designed specifically to meet this need: 30 units of supportive housing that give families the safety, security, and on-site support they need to move forward toward more stable housing.

Ending unsheltered homelessness can be done.

A fast, cost-effective way to build housing at SCALE that is dignified and private so that people are willing to come, where they can then get the intensive supportive services they need.
