On Thursday, April 24th, community members gathered at 6370 San Ignacio Avenue in San José to celebrate a major milestone: the opening of Via del Oro, our newest interim housing community. With 150 beds, this community will serve thousands of residents over the next decade. The first interim housing community built on private land in San José, Via del Oro is fully relocatable and was constructed in under one year. The community cost 10% less to build compared to other interim housing communities in San José, and once fully operational, it is projected to cost half as much per person annually.

Guests heard inspiring remarks from Mayor Matt Mahan, Councilmember George Casey, DignityMoves Co-Founder and CEO Elizabeth Funk, HomeFirst CEO René Ramirez, philanthropist and local developer John Sobrato, and City of San José Housing Department Director Erik Solivan. Each speaker highlighted the pivotal role Via del Oro will play in San José’s bold effort to end unsheltered homelessness.

We were especially honored to hear from Zachary Plumeau (pictured above), one of the community’s first residents, who shared his powerful story of hope and new beginnings.

Following the speeches, guests enjoyed a morning of connection, guided tours, and a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony that marked the beginning of a new chapter for so many of our neighbors.
